MLK Day poster contest winners announced

This year’s theme was, “Where Do We Go from Here?”

“We want to get the students involved,” said Walt F.J. Goodridge, public relations member of the African American Cultural Preservation Committee. “Many great works of student art lost points in the theme category,” he noted

The winners for the kindergarten to second grade level: Matthew W. Thomas, second grade from Grace Christian Academy-Rota; Angela Ann Guiang, K-5, Grace Christian Academy-Rota; and Nadia Jade Arriola, K-4, Grace Christian Academy-Rota.

For the third to fifth grade level: Maria G. Terlaje, third grade, Mount Carmel School-Saipan; Rency Camacho Grace third grade, Grace Christian Academy-Rota; and Audrey Lok Lum Yue, fourth grade, Grace Christian School-Saipan.

For the sixth to 12th grade level: Chrisha Llana, seventh grade, Grace Christian Academy-Rota; Glengela Guiang, seventh grade, Grace Christian Academy, Rota; and Carmelita Takeshi, eighth grade, Grace Christian Academy, Rota.

Special mention went to Shiara Reyes from Ladera International School for a beautiful portrait of Martin Luther King Jr.

There were 116 entries received from Saipan, Tinian, and Rota, and they were judged on their creativity, technical skill, originality, aesthetics, use of space and adherence to this year’s theme.

An essay and speech competition was held in 2006 when Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first celebrated in CNMI.

Dr. Marilyn N. Jackson suggested to the committee to have a poster making contest.

Jackson has an extensive collection of Martin Luther King Jr. memorabilia. She is an associate professor at the University of Guam.  

Winners on Saipan can call attorney Joe Hill at 234-6806 during business hours regarding their $20 prize.
