BOE appoints six school principals

These principals are Marianas High School’s Karen Borja, Gregorio T. Camacho’s Charlotte Camacho, Sinapalo’s Vanessa Hocog, Hopwood Junior High’s Christine Masga, Oleai’s Glenn Muna, and William S. Reyes’ Jeannette Villagomez.

BOE’s committee on fiscal, personnel affairs said the appointments are “conditional or provisional,” but noted that the principals are already in the process of completing the certification requirement.

According to the committee chairman, Herman T. Guerrero, these principals have already obtained their master’s degrees and are considered highly qualified.

He said a memorandum of agreement was signed by the principals, expressing their commitment to complete and obtain the needed requirements.

Guerrero said the “actingship” in many of the public schools is among the major concerns of Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

BOE, he added, wants to address the “WASC issue regarding instability of the schools” as a result of not having permanent administrators.

The action of the board, he said, is a pro-active approach in meeting the accreditation requirements.

Guerrero said their decision was based on the recommendation of  Commissioner of Education Rita Sablan, who directly supervises the administrators.

“It has been done before,” Guerrero replied, when asked if this was the first time that the requirement was “waived.”

PSS human resource officer Ramon Diaz said based on the school system’s regulation, the salary of a permanent principal will be given to those serving in acting capacity after 90 days as acting administrator.

But the salary of principals vary from $50,000-$60,000 depending on their degrees, certifications and years of experience. They are classified as principals I, II, and III.

“For all the acting principals, PSS is providing them $50,000 annual compensation after the lapse of the 90-day actingship,” Diaz said.

PSS has 12 acting school principals of which six of them have master’s degrees, passed Praxis and in the process of obtaining administrator’s certification.
