Chinese mid-autumn festival features mooncakes, fresh fruits and fireworks

Canton Restaurant owner Carol Chan said over 150 guests from the Chinese school and the Chinese community attended the event, occupying all tables set in the parking lot.

“The festivities included fireworks, and the people ate mooncake, an indispensable Chinese, delicacy fresh fruits and fresh foods,” Chan said.

Children also enjoyed lots of games and entertainment.

She said the mid-autumn festival is considered the second most significant celebration for the Chinese, next to the Chinese New Year.

Chan said the celebration is mainly to gather Chinese families together and keep their culture and traditions alive, especially for the children.

She said  some Chinese families have been staying here for so many years so their children need to be acquainted with Chinese traditions each year.

“I would like to thank everyone who came and helped make the celebration a big success,” Chan said.

The CNMI Chinese Association celebrated the first mid-autumn festival on Saipan in 2006 as members of the Chinese community gathered at the Garapan Fishing Base and enjoyed lots of activities including the traditional lion dance, cultural and ballroom dances and more.
