Cocktail party and raffle fundraiser for Japan

The cocktail party cover charge is $10 per person inclusive of one raffle ticket but additional raffle tickets are also available during the party.

Japanese Society of the NMI vice chairman Yoichi Matsumura said all proceeds from the raffle fundraiser and cocktail party for cover charges will be donated to the relief effort as well as 10 percent of all food tabs, and $1 from each alcohol beverage purchased.

The restaurant is located at the Marianas Business Plaza in Susupe.

As of last week, Matsumura and groups working with CNMI government agencies to raise funds for Japan, had  collected over $62,000 in cash and in-kind donations from the community since the campaign started on March 17. They are accepting donations in cash and in-kind until the end of June. All donations will be turned over to the Japanese Consulate.

American Red Cross-NMI chapter executive director John Hirsh said  he is happy that various organizations have been doing all they can to support the victims and survivors of the disaster that struck Japan on March 11.

He said  the CNMI and U.S. response has been tremendous, and it includes the facilitation of fundraising work with international partners.

Hirsh said the Japan Red Cross Society is the largest, most developed in the world. It has 12 million registered volunteers active in all 47 prefectures, owns and operates 100 hospitals with a strong search and rescue capacity.

In response to the disaster, the Japan Red Cross deployed 382 medical teams made up of over 3,000 doctors and nurses and other medical staff.

The volunteers are running soup kitchens, evacuation centers using bicycles to make welfare checks and delivering food and relief items.

It has handed out more than 125,000 blankets, 25,000 emergency kits, 11,000 sleeping sets and 58,000 pieces of clothing to families staying in evacuation centers.

Hirsh said the victims are also receiving assistance from the Operation Tomodachi, the joint Japan-U.S. military relief efforts with 18,000 Japanese and 7,000 American servicemembers.  120 aircraft and 65 naval vessels have been involved in diving and recovering teams and have delivered 200 tons of relief supplies.
