Defendants Ling Zhang, also known as Coco, and her boyfriend Qun Yu, a.k.a. Papasang and/or Jay, were arrested last year after a cooperating defendant led authorities to them while in the act of delivering methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as ice, to a customer.
Both defendants were charged with two counts of trafficking of a controlled substance, three counts of possession of a controlled substance, one count of conspiracy to commit trafficking of a controlled substance, three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, one count each of obstruction of justice and resisting arrest.
Zhang was additionally charged with two counts of unlawful possession of ammunition.
Yu was also arrested in 2007 in another drug related case.
Assistant Attorneys General Tiberius Mocanu and Shelli Neal are prosecuting their cases.
Defense Attorney Steve Woodruff represents the defendants.
According to court documents, the two were arrested in August last year after authorities learned about their illegal activities through a court-issued eavesdropping search warrant.
A cooperating defendant, or CD, called Yu and told him he wanted to buy ice.
Yu delivered the ice to the CD and after the transaction drove off to western Garapan where he and Zhang maintained a second residence.
The CD, meanwhile, turned over the ice bought from Yu to authorities. The crystalline substance tested positive of ice.
On Aug. 4, 2010, authorities conducted a buy-bust operation to arrest Yu.
The CD bought more ice from Yu and the transaction was made inside the defendant’s vehicle.
The CD then signaled to police that a sale had been made. But when police appeared to arrest Yu, he sped off from the scene.
A hot pursuit followed and ended when Yu crashed his vehicle into some trash in Chalan Kiya.
Zhang was apparently also inside the vehicle and the two resisted arrest.
Police also found in Zhang’s possession 9mm ammunition and a .38 caliber pistol.
