Superior Court Associate Judge Perry B. Inos sentenced Melanie Borja Camacho, 41, to two years incarceration, all suspended except for 90 days, and credited the time she already served at the Department of Corrections facility.
Camacho changed her not guilty plea, and admitted theft by failure to make required disposition of funds received.
In exchange for Camacho’s guilty plea, the CNMI government dismissed the remaining theft charge.
The court allowed Camacho to drop and pick up her children from school and to go to church only, and placed her on two years of supervised release.
Inos authorized the Department of Public Safety and the Adult Probation Office to check on Camacho for compliance.
Camacho was directed to pay restitution in the amount of $16,000; a $100 court assessment fee; perform 300 hours of community work service; a probation fee to be determined by the Adult Probation Office; and to obey all federal and CNMI laws.
Assistant Attorney General Eli Golob prosecuted the case while Assistant Public Defender Douglas Hartig served as Camacho’s defense counsel.
The theft was discovered by DFS general manager Shogo Ando, police said.
On Jan. 31, 2010, DFS employees counted the cash in the vault and discovered that $710 was left, and that $16,000 was missing, police said.
While Shogo and DFS finance manager Marida Pensader were visiting Camacho at her residence in Kagman, she admitted taking the money from the vault, police added.
