Ex-Rota mayor says CUC should ensure continuous power supply

CUC, he said, should overhaul the engine and get all the necessary spare parts.

“We need more upgrading and improvement of the engines,” he told Variety, as he noted the recurring power disruption on Rota.

Last July, an islandwide blackout hit Rota which lasted for several days and prompted Sen. Paul A. Manglona to ask CUC to address the island’s power generation problems.

The former mayor said CUC has not established a system that will ensure stable power supply on Rota.

CUC Executive Director Antonio Muna said the Detroit power engine from Tinian was brought to Rota and is now being repaired to produce additional generating power.

Muna said CUC can restore the power demand on Rota after commissioning the available power engines.

CUC, he said, is working on the Caterpillar and Detroit engines to ensure continues operation in the rotating schedule of power generation.

He added that CUC’s Mitsumi engine has a 1.5- to 1.7-megawatt capacity and its other engine is only producing 0.5-megawatt while the demand on Rota is 1.6 to 1.8 megawatts.

After his recent visit to Rota, CUC assistant executive director Abe Utu Malae said they will overhaul two of the three engines on the island.
