Fiji’s ousted PM could face conspiracy charges

The prosecutor told the court they wanted to jointly charge Qarase and former Fijian Holdings chairman Sitiveni Weleilakeba as the foundations for the charges were the same.

Qarase transferred Class A shares from the FHL to his family company Q10 Investments during the time he was a FHL board member, the prosecution said.

While Weleilakeba’s lawyer Ceasar Lateef has filed his submissions against the appeal, Qarase’s counsel Qoriniasi Bale told Justice Daniel Goundar that his client had not been charged yet and he therefore had not filed any affidavits.

The court granted Weleilakeba bail to travel to New Zealand from Sept. 17 to 22 to attend a parent’s interview for his daughter.

The case will now be called for hearing on the appeal on Nov. 27.
