“The red shirt represents the soldiers that bleed in war,” said Mesa, the head of the Family Readiness Group.
Every Friday, the family, relatives and friends of servicemembers will wear red shirts to show their support for the troops.
Mesa introduced Red Shirt Fridays to the island because “we also want our local community to show their support too.”
In the states, the redshirtfridays.org encourages Americans to form red shirt groups in their communities. (See the Web site at www.redshirtfridays.org/index.html.)
“As an Army wife I’m always looking into things that will allow my family and I to show our support to my husband and al the U.S military personnel,” Mesa said.
The local chapter of the American Red Cross and the 670 Rock Steady Shop are selling the red shirts printed with the phrase “Familia Sundalo.”
The red shirts were designed by Frankie Cabrera of 670 Rock Steady Shop and are available there and at the local Red Cross office.
Mesa said the money earned from the sales will go to the armed forces program of the Red Cross.
Over 200 shirts have already been sold, she added.
