Acting Finance Secretary Robert A. Schrack said the contract with Mobil ended on May 31.
“I urge all department and activity heads to procure gasoline for their vehicles no later than the above stated time and hour pending completion of a contract with Shell Marianas which won the bid to supply fuel and lubricants to the CNMI government,” Schrack said in a memorandum issued on May 29.
Press Secretary Charles Reyes Jr. said he hasn’t been briefed about the issue but added that “everything was done pursuant to procurement rules — perhaps we have a better deal with Shell.”
Mobil and Shell could not be immediately reached for comments as of press time yesterday.
Mobil is the fuel supplier of the Commonwealth Utilities Corp., but Reyes is unsure if this contract has also ended.
CUC is an autonomous agency but it’s under the executive branch due to the governor’s executive order declaring a state of emergency.
