Group of landowners willing to take gov’t to court

“Eventually we will go to the court” after exhausting all possible means to settle these land issues, Camacho said. The group’s members, he added, are “willing to go all the way.”

Camacho said the government used his 1,314 square-meter and the 478 square-meter parcels of land in Achugao for the construction of a public road and the installation power distribution lines.

He said the government used his land for public purposes without his permission, a legal transfer of deed of sale or just compensation.

Camacho said their group is still waiting for the executive branch and the Legislature to negotiate with them.

Former Speaker Oscar C. Rasa of the CNMI Descents for Self-Government and Indigenous Rights group said: “We’re open for diplomatic discussions with the government.”

He added that he will advise Camacho to negotiate with the government before filing a lawsuit.

Rasa has earlier expressed interest to help Camacho’s group, saying land disputes are indigenous issues.

In a previous interview, Camacho said the group of landowners will conduct its initial meeting in September.
