Jimmy Ruiz gets suspended sentence for biting partner

Judge Kenneth L. Govendo originally sentenced Ruiz to one year imprisonment, all suspended except for 72 hours.

As part of the plea agreement, Govendo dismissed with prejudice the remaining charge of disturbing the peace as moved by the prosecution.

Ruiz was also placed on one year probation. He will write a letter of apology to his victim,  pay a $100 fine, a $25 court assessment fee, and a probation fee to be determined by the Adult Probation Office.

He will complete 100 hours of community work service and attend and complete anger management counseling as well as any other counseling recommended by the treatment provider or the Adult Probation Office.

Ruiz will submit to a drug and alcohol assessment and treatment, if recommended.

Assistant Attorneys General Shelli Neal and Nicole Driscoll prosecuted the case while Assistant Public Defender Matthew Meyer represented Ruiz.

On July 4, 2011, at about 3:16 p.m., Ruiz asked his partner if she was having an affair with someone online.

Ruiz then bit the victim’s face and arm. The victim told police this was not the first time that she was physically abused by Ruiz.
