Macaranas: Saipan needs public transport system

The island’s manamko’ population, he added, will continue to increase and they will require public transportation.

A public transport system will also benefit the other members of the community, Macanaras said.

There are nine buses serving the manamko’, he said, but soon, the number of senior citizens will increase.

New buses would mean additional expenses — the hiring of new drivers, the construction of new parking lots and an increase in traffic on Saipan, Macaranas said.

Macaranas he is hoping that the Legislature and the administration will work on the creation of a “self-generating” public transportation system that can be administered by a private company.
