Samoa’s People’s Party predicts change

So believes the Peoples’ Party.

Newly elected party president, Maposua Toleafoa Punafelutu R. S. Toailoa, said Prime Minister Tuilaepa Lupesoli’ai Sa’ilele Malielegaoi, will make a good opposition leader.

Even a well-performed prime minister like John Howard who rid Australia of foreign debt and installed a strong economy was told by voters it was time for change, Maposua pointed out.

Changes of government has also occurred in the United States of America and New Zealand, he said.

“I believe many people did not think Helen Clark and her government would be defeated,” he said. “The wind of change is blowing.”

Many in Samoa “especially, the educated youth aged between 21 and 35 year,” are now interested in what our leaders are doing.

Maposua believes if the issues are understood, electors will vote accordingly.

“I think that our population is now more and more exposed to the issues,” he said. “We will make sure that we will bring the issues to the people, we will explain to the people what they need to know so that … (they) can then decide what is best for them. “The main change that we would like to see come about is a change of leadership, first and foremost.”

The road change issue, the issue that gave birth to the party will still be a “live” one come next elections. If theovernment goes ahead and makes the road change next year as announced, People’s Party will reverse it, Maposua said.
