MHS students to pay $5 for prom

Students will only have to pay $5 to attend the prom, which will take place at the Pacific Islands Club this Saturday.

“At first, the plan was to use the school gym, set it up, have the equipment, and transform it into an awesome prom,” vice principal Cherlyn Cabrera explains.

The goal was for prom to be on campus this year in an effort to reduce costs so that more students would be able to attend.

“We wanted to keep in mind that the community is struggling economically right now. Also, with all the new restrictions on fundraising, we wanted the students to still have a great prom experience and be able to afford it,” Cabrera continues.

Although the planning for the event began in September, there were some set-backs with equipment and not everything came in on time.

The decision was made to change the venue to the Pacific Islands Club.

Since the five dollar price had already been announced early in the year, the organizers felt it unfair to raise the price solely due to the change of location.

With the regular meal price at PIC’s Magellan costing a little over $20, many are interested to know where the money will come from to pay for the difference.

“We made some sacrifices and asked for community help. Also, there were some funds that we could re-program,” says Cabrera. “In thinking about the kids and how lots of parents lost jobs recently, changing the price to twenty-five dollars would have excluded a great amount of students.”

Cabrera expresses how keeping the price at five dollars will help to make the students feel supported.

Referring to MHS principal Craig Garrison, Cabrera says, “Mr. Garrison’s vision is for the students to have memorable high school moments and to not only participate in the classroom but in all school activities. It is all part of the education process and experience. If the students have good experiences with education, they will want to pursue it more.”

The prom will follow a “Masquerade” theme and will take place this Saturday evening.

Deveney Dela Cruz, junior class president, says, “Although we’re still selling tickets, I’m estimating the number in attendance to be around 250 or more.”
