NMI’s 1st middle school opens in August

NSTEAD of just having a Kagman Junior High School catering to 7th and 8th graders, the Board of Education approved on Friday the inclusion of 6th graders, thus making it the first middle school in CNMI.

To avoid confusion with many schools acronyms, BOE wants to give the new middle school a different name.

“It’s not going to be KMS. It will have a new, different name. Something that would express the community’s ownership of the institution. We’re still thinking about it,” BOE spokesman Robert Myers said.

The creation of a middle school was proposed to address the growing population in the area and the anticipated increase in number of transferees from the private schools.

A planning committee headed by Hopwood Junior High School Principal David Borja endorsed the establishment of Kagman Middle School beginning August this year.

The middle school would be composed of grade levels 6th, 7th and 8th.

Based on the revised report submitted by the committee to the Board of Education last week, students residing in As Matuis down to Sadog Tasi, Capitol Hill to Kagman and down to Papago will be registered at KMS.
