A lack of funds means patients who would be sent to Hawaii or New Zealand for life-saving treatment must fund their own trip.
Families are being asked to pull together to send their sick relatives overseas.
But for those who cannot afford treatment elsewhere, Dr. Salausa John Ah Ching from LBJ Hospital here in Pago Pago said there is little hope.
“We just have to follow and do the treatment, whatever we can locally, to sustain those patients,” Salausa said.
“And we put them on a list, a waiting list, so that if we do get some funds later on, then we would start sending them again.”
