PNG official blames politicians for increased lawlessness

PNG’s Justice Minister and Attorney General Allan Marat told Parliament that bad political leadership had contributed to many problems facing PNG.

“Every one of you sitting in this house should take responsibility in helping eradicate these problems,” Marat said.

“Everything rises and falls on leaders and, therefore, we should all take an interest in everything happening in our electorates,” he added.

Marat said the problems of rundown court houses and lack of resident District Court magistrates were not restricted to one province or electorate alone, but were prevalent throughout the country.

He said stakeholders of the law and justice sector were working toward addressing them.

Marat said addressing law and order effectively required an integrated approach from the police, Correctional Services, judiciary, Community Development and every Papua New Guinean.

He said law and order should not be addressed in isolation.

However, Marat’s blasting of MPs did not go down well with his colleagues.

Many said his department had been inefficient with 9,000 state cases against it as examples.

Lagaip-Porgera MP Philip Kikala said law and order problems were increasing and he questioned the department’s plans and policies regarding an effective justice delivery system.
