Schools invited to join Christmas tree decorating contest

Paseo de Marianas Promoters Inc. coordinator Sonia Siwa said invitations have already been sent to  private and public schools for the contest that will start on Dec. 2, but only nine have confirmed participation so far.

Siwa said as in the previous years, they will provide the Christmas trees to the schools and participants will use recycled decorations.

The contest is in collaboration with Beautify CNMI, the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs and the Division of Environmental Quality.

“We are urging all the other schools to join the decoration contest. This is also one way of instilling in the children’s minds the value of recycling,” Siwa said.

Participating elementary schools include San Antonio, Saipan Community School, Koblerville Dandan, Saipan Seventh Day Adventist School, Tanapag, Kagman, San Vicente and Ladera International School of Saipan.

Siwa said Paseo de Marianas Promoters will display a huge Christmas Tree at the Paseo de Marianas adorned with recycled soda cans.

Last year’s Christmas tree was decorated with discarded mineral water bottles.

This year, students from Tinian and Rota schools are invited to join the drawing contest for the “My Holiday Greeting to our Visitors.”

Siwa said they have already sent the invitations, asking the students to send in their drawing entries on Nov. 30.

Drawings submitted will be put on display at galleries set up at Paseo de Marianas from Dec. 2, 2009 through Jan. 6, 2010.

Siwa said that schools can send their registration forms for the Christmas tree decorating contest by fax to 234-9268 or hand deliver them to Kinpachi Restaurant in Garapan. For more information, call 234-6900 and ask for Sonia or Yoshiko.
