Senate announces new leadership

The 50-year-old Manglona of Rota was first elected in 1987 and is the CNMI’s longest serving legislator.

A long-time Republican, he won a sixth term as an Independent in 2007.

Manglona was Senate president in the 11th, 12th and 13th Legislatures.

He supported Gov. Benigno R. Fitial of the Covenant Party in the runoff election.

Reyes, R-Saipan, said Tinian Republican Floor Leader Jude U. Hofschneider will be the next vice president while Rota Independent Sen.-elect Jovita M. Taimanao will be the new legislative secretary.

Reyes, 63, said they have previously agreed that the Senate presidency should be rotated among Saipan, Tinian and Rota.

“It’s Rota’s turn now,” he said.

During the 15th Legislature, Sen. Joseph M. Mendiola, Covenant-Tinian, was Senate president. He was succeeded by Reyes in the current, 16th, Legislature.

The incoming Senate leadership also agreed on the following committee designations:

• Reyes, chairman of Federal Relations and Independent Agencies.

• Taimanao, Fiscal Affairs.

• Sen.-elect Juan M. Ayuyu, Ind.-Rota, Public Utilities, Transportation and Communications. • Ralph DLG. Torres, R-Saipan, Resources, Economic Development and Programs.

• Hofschneider, Rules and Procedure.

• Sen.-elect Francisco Q. Cruz, R-Tinian, Committee on Executive Appointments and Government Investigations.

Reyes said they still have to determine who will chair Health and Welfare Programs, Judiciary, Government and Law, Education and Youth Affairs.
