SHEFA Administrator Henry Hofschneider noted that the number increased from the 184 he earlier announced.
Noncompliance with SHEFA rules and regulations is the major reason why some applications were not approved, he said.
July 1 was the last day for the submission of applications, which totaled 787.
The deadline for submission of supporting documents is on Sept. 30.
Of the 787, Hofschneider said, 377 have been reviewed and 116 were found to be ineligible.
He said they are still reviewing 410 applications.
Committee chairwoman Josephine T. Sablan said the SHEFA board, of which she is a member, will make a decision on the eligible applicants when it meets on Sept. 15.
Once the board approves the list of eligible students, Hofschneider said they will transmit it to the Department of Finance for processing of the checks.
The committee meeting that reviewed and decided on the eligibility list for the fall 2011 academic term was also attended by SHEFA board member Ursula Aldan and mayor’s office staffer Gloriana M. Teuira.
Hofschneider said the total financial assistance for 261 recipients will reach to $473,100.
Of the 261 students, 47 are new students in the CNMI while 20 will study abroad.
47 new on-island scholars will receive $37,600 in grant in aid, $1,000 for field of study, and $3,000 in incentives. While the 20 new off-island recipients will get $24,000 grant in aid, $1,000 field of study and no incentives.
There are 97 on-island ongoing scholars and another 97 off-island ongoing scholars. They will be appropriated $77,000 in grant in aid, $40,000 for field of study, and $41,000 in incentives.
Off-island on-going scholars will get $116,400 in grant in aid, $54,000 for field of study, and $77,500 in incentives.
In his report to the committee, Hofschneider said of the 261 eligible students, 20 are new recipients who will be studying abroad, 19 are freshmen and one is a junior student. Three are associates in arts while 17 are bachelor of arts students.
There are 47 new recipients who will study in the CNMI — 42 are freshmen, four sophomores and one senior.
