Writers, artists encouraged to submit to Guma’ Remetaw by April 30

WRITERS and artists are reminded that the submission deadline for the inaugural issue of Guma’ Remetaw, Proa Publication’s first literary journal, is April 30

“Some of the submissions are outstanding and will look good in the inaugural issue,” said Proa Publications editor-in-chief Adam Walsh.

According to the journal’s website, Guma’ Remetaw is accepting submissions from indigenous artists, artists residing in the Marianas, and artists whose work concentrates on Pacific Island themes such as place, voice, language, and culture.

The journal’s name is a combination of two words: “Guma’ ” meaning home in Chamorro, and “Remetaw” meaning seafarer in Carolinian. Together they mean “house of the seafarer.” The theme for the inaugural issue is “mesngun,” which is Chamorro for “resilient, tolerant, or persevering.”

Individuals can submit three to five poems of any length, with a limit of 10 total pages for poetry submissions.

Guma’ Remetaw will accept one short story or flash fiction per author. The submission may be between 1,000 and 2,500 words in a single file. The journal prefers the PDF format.

Authors may also submit one creative nonfiction work between 1,000 and 2,500 words, also as a PDF file.

In addition, the literary journal will accept a single oral history interview per author. Authors may submit audio and/or video files, although longer files may need to be sent to PROAPublications@marianas.edu
