No sign of missing fisherman

AFTER three days of searching, a missing fisherman had yet to be found, Variety learned.

On Saturday evening, he and another man went fishing in the waters off Pakpak Beach, San Antonio. Only one returned to shore. He received medical attention before he was transported to the Commonwealth Health Center where he was discharged the same day, the Department of Public Safety said.

DPS said after it received a call regarding an overdue fisherman at 7:55 p.m.  Saturday, a rescue boat was launched and searched the area from Pakpak Beach to the Coral Ocean Point beach area. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter joined the search, DPS said.

The search was called off at 2 a.m. and resumed the next day, Sunday, but there was still no sign of the missing fisherman.

The operation continued Monday with some relatives of the missing fisherman joining the search.

As 72 hours had passed since the report about an overdue fisherman, DPS called off its search efforts Tuesday afternoon.

On Saturday evening, the CNMI Emergency Operation Center State Warning Point issued a public marine advisory regarding hazardous surfs of 7 to 9 feet, and rip currents that “can sweep even the best swimmer away from shore into deeper water.”
