THE Saipan Chamber of Commerce will host a gubernatorial debate on Thursday, Sept. 29, at Saipan World Resort.
In 2018, the chamber and Northern Marianas College hosted a gubernatorial debate that was held at the multi-purpose center on Sept. 25 of that year.
During their monthly general membership meeting Wednesday at the Hyatt Regency Saipan, chamber members voted on the topics for the debate, and submitted questions that could potentially be asked during the debate.
Each member was asked to choose one topic from the following selection: environmental and sustainable development, immigration and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, retirement and veteran benefits, healthcare, education, cannabis, gaming, welfare, workforce, the U.S. military, economy and diversification, agriculture and seafood production, infrastructure and utilities.
Roughly 50 members were present during the meeting.
In her remarks, chamber treasurer Janice Tenorio said the members’ votes on topics, as well as their questions, will be placed in a box that will be secured by chamber board member Dr. Joshua Wise.
Chamber president Joseph Guerrero and vice president Shayne Villanueva were off-island and absent from the meeting.
Tenorio said Northern Marianas College will be responsible for media, ushering, and the logistics for the debate.
More details regarding the debate will be provided by the chamber and NMC as soon as they’re available.
This year’s gubernatorial candidates are Republican Gov. Ralph DLG Torres, Republican-turned-Independent Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios, and Democratic Rep. Christina “Tina” E. Sablan.
