Salas-Igitol is new VA executive officer

GOVERNOR Ralph DLG Torres on Monday appointed military and veterans family advocate Marie Salas-Igitol as the new executive officer of the Military Liaison and Veterans Affairs Office.

Salas-Igitol is a spouse of a military veteran, and mother and aunt of active servicemembers from different branches of the U.S. military. She used to be the coordinator of Military and Family Readiness in the CNMI.

In his appointment letter to Salas-Igitol, the governor told wrote, “I am confident that you will devote your time and efforts to represent the interests of our active servicemembers and veterans who devoted their lives to defending our islands and our country.”

The governor said the Military Liaison and Veterans Affairs Office is responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of the office and has authority over all military and veterans affairs of the U.S. armed forces in all matters that are not within the exclusive jurisdiction of the U.S. government.

In an interview, Salas-Igitol said: “I will do my utmost best to serve our veterans and their beneficiaries.” Her appointment does not require Senate consent.

Salas-Igitol’s predecessor is Stanley T. Iakopo who resigned last week.
