Toribiong to attend Copenhagen summit

First stop for the president is the 10th Micronesian Chief Executive Summit to be held in Guam starting on Dec. 3.

Attending the summit are the presidents of Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Governors of Pohnpei, Guam, Yap and Kosrae.

The president told reporters that the issues that will be discussed will be climate change, green energy and waste disposal.

The president will then proceed to the Copenhagen, Denmark for the Climate Change Conference.

The Climate Change conference will run from Dec. 6 to 18 and will gathered representatives from 170 countries to move toward a new global treaty by 2010.

Governmental representatives from 170 countries are expected to be in Copenhagen in the days of the conference accompanied by other governmental representatives, NGO’s, journalists and others. In total 8000 people are expected to Copenhagen in the days of the climate meeting.

The conference in Copenhagen is the 15th conference of parties (COP15) in the Framework Convention on Climate Change. The recent meeting in United Nations Climate Change Conferences was held in December 2007 in Bali.

Earlier President Toribiong told international arena that Palau like other Pacific Island nations are vulnerable to climate change.

He said that Palau will lose a significant amount of land if the prediction of the 2001 International Panel on Climate Change that there will be a rise of between 0.2-0.9m in sea level by 2100 will come through.

Toribiong said this in his speech before the World Ocean Forum in Korea adding that climate change will affect the low-lying coastal areas, erosion and inundiation is also a major risks to Palau.

According to data he presented in the forum, it is also forecasted that the Kayangel atoll will be inundated by sea water and may cease to exist by 2100 if the sea level rises close to one meter from its current level.
