Boating safety fishing derby set for May 27

LOCAL anglers are invited to participate in the Annual Boating Safety Fishing Derby on Saturday, May 27.

It will take place in the Saipan Lagoon, away from sanctuary areas. Three categories are open for competition: biggest catch, which awards the largest fish caught in the derby; most variety, which awards the team that catches the most varied amount of reef fish; and total weight, which is given to the team with the heaviest catch.

Only fish caught with handlines and rod and reels qualify for the derby. Fish must be at least 7.5 inches at a minimum to qualify for the derby count and must be an “edible species” according to official rules and regulations.

Vessels check in and launch from  Smiling Cove Marina, and fishing taking place from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There is a $40 entry fee which covers a captain and a single angler. Each additional angler is $10.

All vessels must undergo an inspection prior to the fishing derby.
