Comeback win for School House Roc…ball

After suffering the worst set of Rocball ever played by a teacher’s team, the teachers did a little brainstorming amongst themselves before starting the second set. And, whatever it was that the teachers talked among themselves, they played like they were on a mission.

The next two sets were a give-and-take battle of which team had the lead and how long they kept the lead before the set’s end.

The teachers defeated the Kingz, 19-16 in the second set. In spite of their second set win, the teachers trailed the Kingz in game points, 33-19. Team School House Roc…ball needed to win set three by 15 points.

In Rocball, a game is determined by who has outscored their opponents in game points, and which team takes the final set. If a team scores more game points than their opponent and wins the final set, the game is over.

The teachers needed to take the final set to prevent the Kingz from winning and they knew they weren’t going to beat the Kingz at a 15-point margin.

As it turned out, the teachers were able to squeeze past the Kingz, 17-16. The game entered a situation unique to Rocball’s competitive feature. A team cannot win a game in a losing set even after outscoring their opponents in game points. A team also cannot win a match even if they won the most sets (including set three) with the least amount of game points.

Because the Kingz outscored the teachers in game points (49-36), they only needed to win one overtime set. Overtime sets are won by scoring seven points or a goal – whichever comes first.

The teachers – who won two out of three sets but scored the least game points – needed to win two overtime sets. Game points are the sum of a team’s set scores.

The teachers served well in the first overtime set while the Kingz rallied and hit the ball back over the net. The teachers prepared for a spike and Tyce Mister – coming off the back court in a high vertical form – slammed the ball through the Kingz and into the goal to claim the first OT set.

Team School House Roc…ball scored the first and last point of the second overtime set to hand the Kingz their first defeat.

In Rocball’s heavy-hit scoring, the Kingz led 8-6 in aces. In backcourt ‘kee’ scoring, the teachers outscored the Kingz, 4-3. Kingz’s Dereck Olopai scored one ace and three kees and Maria Ornes of School House Roc…ball scored three aces and one kee. Mister and Kingz’s JR Pelisamen each scored their team’s only goals.
