Geckos upset Dolphins in MISO volleyball

The Dolphins nearly lost composure after losing 25-8 in the first set last Tuesday. Steady passes between Zoe Jewell and Amber Roberts set SIS at a good pace. Marianas High’s Rikka Kaijo deflected several spikes from Roberts, but couldn’t match up to her at the net.

While the Geckos’ record stays clean, MHS 1 still holds a tough record of four wins and one loss. They immediately gained ground in set two, tying the game 20-20. By then, Glorily Williams and Rachel Abrams stepped in to crush the confident Geckos.

As MHS marked a point, the Geckos stayed one step behind. The Dolphins choked SIS with a rapid offense, sending multiple spikes from Williams and Tony Yamada. MHS 1 quickly took the second set, winning 25-23.

SIS – now pressured for a victory – sent its key players to put finish off the Dolphins. Both teams tied 7-7 and again 9-9 minutes after. SIS thrived from Marianas High’s weakening defense, outlasting them in returns. They stormed for a 15-12 win as the Dolphins stumbled for the ball.

In another game, Grace Christian Academy cruised to their second win over Kagman High School. The Eagles scored 25-11, 25-15, and 15-12 to wipe out Kagman High. The Ayuyus came close in set two, catching up to GCA’s eight points.

The Eagles widened the gap with a 16-10 lead. Christine and Crystalline Cristobal, Maria Esmero, and sophomore Aire Batallones was all the team needed to claim the final set.

MHS 1 faced GCA in Tuesday’s third match up, winning two of three sets.

Saipan Southern High School outran MHS 2 in a fourth game, winning 25-23, 25-19, and 15-8 in all sets.

A new set of volleyball games will start today, 4:30 p.m. at the MHS Gymnasium.
