NMI paddlers bring home gold

NMI paddlers won gold medals in the 3rd Annual Micronesia Cup Canoe Race in Guam on Sunday.

The Marianas Outrigger Canoe Club clocked in at 6.26.77 to beat the Saipan Paddling Club (6.37.71) and the Marianas Pacific Paddlers Blue (6:45.19) in the 1000-meter Open Women’s Finals.

 The Saipan Paddling Club, with a finish time of 5.39.3, topped the 100-meter Open Men’s finals, beating Napu which came in at 5.48.2 and Taotao Galaide, 5.59.8.

In the 500-meter Open Women Finals, the Marianas Outrigger Canoe Club finished first at 2.57.4, followed by Taotao Galaide  (3.04.6) and the Saipan Paddling Club (3.06.5).

In the 500-meter Open Men’s Finals, Napu won the gold with a finish time 2.34.8. Taotao Galaide came in second at 2.38.7 while Maneran Galaide finished third at 2.43.8.

In the 1000-meter Junior Boys Finals, the Saipan Paddling Club won first place with a finish time of 6.14.28, defeating Puti’on Tasi (6.20.98).

In the 1000-meter Girls Finals, the Puti’on paddled uncontested and clocked in at 6.47.3.

In the 500-meter Junior Boys Finals, the Saipan Paddling Club won the gold with a finish time of 2.44.0 while Puti’on Tasi took the silver at 2.56.1.

Puti’on Tasi won the gold in the 500-meter Girls Finals at 3.07.2 while the Saipan Paddling Club got the silver at 3.16.5.

Northern Marianas National Paddle Sports Federation President Justin Andrew congratulated the NMI paddling clubs and their teams “for making the podium over the weekend in Guam.”

 He also recognized the hard work of the coaches and athletes.

He said the results show improvements in the NMI’s outrigger paddling programs.

He encourages everyone to keep training and keep improving.

“We can now build from the Guam competition and work toward next year’s Micronesia Cup when we host the regional annual event. The last time we hosted it was in 2012,” Andrew said.
