The Pohnpei sluggers who joined the annual event for the first time is bringing home the runner-up award after making it to the finals following the double elimination round at the Capital Hill Ball Field from Friday to Saturday.
With Strik Anson firing a two-run single in the second inning, Team Pohnpei set the lead and if not to the Team Saipan’s narrow defense in between bases, could have won this year’s event.
Pohnpei Lt. Gov. Churchill Edward who arrived on Friday did not miss a single game of the event. He stayed with fans at the Team Pohnpei’s bleachers and cheered along with visiting fans and his compatriots who have been living on Saipan.
Edward congratulated Team Pohnpei such a great performance in their first chance to play in the regional softball tournament.
“It’s great we are now part of this tournament,” Edward said as he expressed gratitude to the Budweiser, the organizer of the event.
He said Pohnpei should continue being part of the KQOD family and he hopes they can host the tournament in the future.
Pohnpei, he said has so many softball leagues. They have leagues for he masters, coeds and businesses.
Just a few months ago, they have a team that played in Goodwill Games on Guam. Edward said they plan to join another off-island tournament this week.
Being with Team Pohnpei on Saipan, Edward said is their government’s show of support in their island’s sport community.
