Point Break Open starts today

The two-day event will consist of the Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Stand Up Open, Kids, and Grommet Divisions. The Kids Division will be made up of participants between 12 and 17 years old, while the Grommet Division will include children 11 years old and below.

Competitors in the Men and Women’s Open will ride in today’s qualifier. From there, they will receive a numerical ranking that places them for Saturday’s main event bracket.

The first round of the main event will feature three-person heats. The highest scoring rider will be guaranteed a spot in the third round. The two other riders will face each other in round two – the winner will move on into the third round against the highest scoring rider from round one.

The Kids, Grommets, and Stand Up Divisions will not be based on an elimination format. Instead, the participants will compete in two one-minute rides over a span of three rounds.

Applications for all divisions are still available today at PIC’s Information Center. Participants in the Grommets Division will be paying a $25 entry fee. Entry fee for those in the Kids, Stand Up Open, Women’s Open, and Men’s Open is $35.

Paid riders will receive admission to all pre-contest and warm up sessions, a limited edition competitor’s gift, lunch on Saturday at the event site, and admission to the post contest banquet.

All rounds for Saturday will start at 12 pm, with the post awards banquet taking place at 6:30 pm.

“Overall we are expecting close to 50 riders coming from Japan, Korea, Saipan, and Guam,” said Glenn Policare, the event’s coordinator. “Andy Yoon, President of Flowriding Association in Korea will be one of the international judges this year.”

In addition, men and women’s champions from the recent Carribean Bay Flowrider Open in Seoul, Korea will also be competing in this weekend’s events.

Byron Dela Cruz, Mike Saures, and last’s year’s third place winner in the Men’s Open, Ray Babauta, are among the local riders that will face the 2010 Point Break Open’s international competitors.

Policare also stated that the competition will follow the same criteria as the World Flowriding Championships.

Over all, five judges will be scoring all riders. Participants will be judged based on degree of difficulty, how much of the flowriding surface is used, and fluidity. According to Policare, repetition is not encouraged.

Cash prizes and trophies are available for the top three winners of all divisions. A $500 prize awaits the winning individual from the Men’s Open. The prize pool for the Women’s Open will include a five-day, four-night gold card for two, courtesy of PIC.  $1,400 in flight coupons from Delta Airlines will be distributed among all divisions.

The Monster-Trick Award and Delta-Spirit Award will also be given this year.

“I expect everyone to have a good time – I know it’s a competition, but here at PIC, we’re all about having fun,” said Policare.
