Talavera, Cal rule February roll-offs

None came past Talavera’s 837 pinfall record from Saturday. He garnered 179 pinfalls in game one, falling short to Percy Omechelang’s 188 score.

Men’s third place winner Raymond Zapanta started strong at 216 pinfalls – just one pin above Alex Castro. Talavera didn’t have much luck in game two and only improved by four pins. Leo Teodoro edged him at 224 pinfalls, followed by 207 and 198 from Simon Manacop and Bernard Paraiso, respectively.

Talavera’s lucky break came in games three and four, where he finished off with 237 and 246

pinfalls for a 209.25 average. Omechelang rallied to second place with 195, 215, and 213 in games two through four. He totaled 811 pinfalls, with a 202.75 average. Likewise, Zapanta finished off with 194, 182, and 180 for a 772 total. He came below Omechelang after failing to reach the 200 mark. Zapanta averaged 193 pinfalls per game.

Meanwhile, Cal bested all female bowlers with dual scores of 725 and 666 from the two-day event. Her best score came from Saturday’s first game at 208 pinfalls. Cal slowly held on with 182, 179, and 156 in games two to four for a 181.25 average. She completed Sunday with 181, 158, 183, and 144 pinfalls.

No other female bowler reached 200 pinfalls – not even Gloria Omechelang, who climbed her way to second place. The 2011 Queen of the Lanes champ mustered 139, 159, 160, and 182 pinfalls last Sunday to post 640 (160 average). She slightly improved from her 620 (155 average) score in Saturday.

Yho Villavicencio came to third place with 612 pinfalls – just five pins above fourth-ranked Gigi Zapanta – and averaged 153 per game. In Sunday’s roll-off, she outran Gloria Omechelang, 159-139 in game one and 170-159 in game two. She fell behind however, with 136 and 147 pinfalls in the last half of the competition.

Talavera received $90, Percy Omechelang earned $50, and Zapanta bagged $40 in the men’s division. Cal won $75 while Gloria Omechelang and Villavicencio struck $40 and $30, respectively.

The Saipan Bowling Association welcomed 23 male and nine female bowlers in this month’s tournament – a slight increase from January. The tournament is exclusive to SBA members only.
