Rota Independent Sen. Juan M. Ayuyu said the cost of goods on Saipan are cheaper compared to Rota who thus get “less value” for their food stamps.
“As you are aware, the new CPI data will be a key factor in our efforts to increase benefits for Rota and Tinian residents who are recipients [of food stamps] under the Nutrition Assistance Program,” Ayuyu told Commerce Secretary Michael Ada in a letter sent last Thursday.
Ayuyu separately wrote to Congressman Gregorio C. Sablan thanking him for his efforts to help constituents on Rota and Tinian.
The senator said Commerce has already initiated a study of the local CPI trend.
“This study should shed more light on the disparities between the prices of basic commodities on our respective islands,” he told Sablan. “It is my sincere hope that the Department of Commerce study will be completed quickly so that the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs may use this information in justifying increased food stamp benefits for Rota and Tinian.”
DCCA administers the federally funded food stamp program in the CNMI.
It can negotiate with the U.S. Department of Agriculture regarding the amount of assistance that should go to the CNMI.
Ayuyu offered his assistance to DCCA Secretary Melvin O. Faisao in exploring the possibility of negotiating for more food stamp aid for Rota and Tinian residents.
“If the Senate can lend legislative support or otherwise in DCCA’s administration of the food stamp program, please let me know,” he told Faisao.
