KOROR (Palau Horizon) — Earth Day will be slightly more festive this year with a day-long party in three areas here.
Pearl Marumoto, chairwoman of the organizing committee, said the celebration this year will be highlighted by a block party on April 22, Earth Day.
During the block party, the organizing committee will showcase dances, games, music, food displays and drives. This year’s theme is “Protect our Home.”
The month-long celebration will kick-off again with a mock congress to give students the opportunity to participate in making laws pertaining to the protection of the environment.
Thirty students will participate in the mock congress which commenced on April 1 and end on April 5. The students are expected to draw up measures to protect the environment.
The measures will be submitted to the Olbiil Era Kelulau, Palau’s national legislature, at the end of the event.
The mock congress will be held at the Senate chambers.
Last year, three bills were submitted by the students who participated in the mock congress.
One of the proposed measures sought to address the long-standing issue on Palau’s anti-littering laws.
The measure would implement stringent measures to discourage people from littering.
This measure became Senate Bill 6-93 and has been passed by the Senate and forwarded to the House of Delegates for action.
There will be another campaign for energy conservation this year. Buses will ply Koror’s roads to give free rides from April 8 to 22.
On April 19 and 20 a cleanup of Koror and Babeldaob will be conducted.
