Federal park initiates cleanup of former landfill

U.S. Park Ranger Nancy Kelchner told the Variety that the cleanup activities will start at 7 a.m. and the tree planting will take place from 9 to 10 a.m.

Kelchner said they will get rid of old tires and refrigerators, as well as disposed waste stuck in the soil.

“We are going to plant about 30 trees near the stream at the park, and we would appreciate the help of the community.”

She said they will supply the participants with gloves and other cleaning materials.

“We advise the volunteers to come with shoes, sunscreen and clothes they can get very dirty with.”

The National Public Lands Organization is the nation’s largest volunteer effort that aims to improve, enhance and preserve public lands so that people could enjoy a clean and beautiful environment.

Last year, 120,000 volunteers all over the United States participated in beautifying the environment and planting over 1.6 million trees.

“We want to be a part of this national event that helps us to have a clean and beautiful environment. Come and join us improve, enhance and beautify our island,” Kelchner said.

American Memorial Park is one of three areas that will be participating in Saturday’s cleanup event.

The other two areas are Asan Beach and War in the Pacific NHP-Asan Beach Unit on Guam.
