Healthy lifestyle curricula eyed

Executive Order No. 263 stated that the committee will consist of six members, three from the Ministry of Health to be appointed by the Health Ministry and three from the Ministry of education.

The committee is tasked with the job of creating separate curricula for elementary and high school students that will teach them to incorporate good eating habits, appropriate nutrition and safe physical activity.The committee, the order said may also utilize the expertise of knowledgeable members of the community and seek the advises and suggestions of the parents of students.“These chronic medical conditions can lead to decreased mobility and mortality and decrease the quality of life of not only the individual sufferer but also that person’s friends and family.He said that these chronic medical conditions can often be prevented if an individual is physically active and chooses good eating habits.The curricula he said will help emphasize that a healthy lifestyle is essential and will develop life-long physical skills and activities that will contribute to fitness and good health.The order said that healthy lifestyle programs in Palau’s elementary and high schools will result in happier, healthier and more academically successful students.The order added that the committee shall present the model curricula to the health ministry and education ministry and to the president by no later than the last business day of January 2010.
