Burglars break into container, house, steal construction materials

Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Lei Ogumoro yesterday said  DPS received a call reporting a burglary and theft incident at 7:55 a.m. on Jan. 31, 2009 at a construction site at a residence in As Perdido.

Ogumoro said based on preliminary investigation, an employee of Vargas Construction arrived at the job site on Saturday at around 7:15 a.m. and noticed that the door of a 20-foot container and the door of the house, which was undergoing construction, were broken into.

She said the employee called the police after discovering that several items were stolen from the site.

Police discovered that the suspects cut the lock of the container and broke the main door open.

“The suspects stole various materials, appliances, and fixtures belonging to the home owner, most of them brand new items,” Ogumoro said.

She added that the stolen items included hand tools, power tools and equipment belonging to the contractor, Vargas Corporation.

The place was last secured on Jan. 30. Taken from the container was a new Upright Freezer, a 5,700-watt generator 10–HP Yamaha, a sprinkler pump, a 3.6 cubic feet refrigerator, a Brinkman 4 Burner Grill, a complete set toilet bowl, and a 6’x6’ Desert Sand Sun Shade.

Stolen from the house were several items including a new Staccato double bowl kitchen sink, a Hamilton DC Kit, two pieces of chrome shower faucets, two closet organizers, three bronze finial rods, three handle bath faucets, four pieces of outside lights, three walls of column lights, one ceiling fan for a screened porch, assorted door locks, knobs and hardware.

Also stolen from the contractor’s  were a Makita Table Saw, a Makita Circular Saw, a David White Level Transit & Tripod, a Makita Demolition Hammer, a Dewalt Hammer Drill, a green generator with 2-wheels, Black & Decker drills, electric drills, electric steel cutter/saw/miter, a five-speed mountain bike, assorted plumbing fittings, assorted mason hand tools and carpentry tools, Makita grinder, shovels, bar clamps and outlets.

Ogumoro said DPS is requesting members of the community to call the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 664-9045/50 or Crime Stoppers at 234-7272 if they have any information regarding this crime.

All calls to Crime Stoppers are kept anonymous. No caller ID is used and a reward of up to $1,000 is given for any information leading to an arrest.
