“Since it is holiday, it is also a family day,” said Marilou Camacho, a resident of Garapan.
She said the holiday allowed her and her husband to spend more time with their two children.
Like other families, they had a barbecue and swam in the waters off Micro Beach.
Mary Faith Santos, granddaughter of a soldier who fought in World War II, said the beach reminds her of the war stories she heard from her grandfather.
“He usually talked about the bloody shores of the island,” she recalled.
At American Memorial Park, 10 people watched a movie at the Visitor Center.
They said they were supposed to attend the ceremony at the park but arrived late so they decided to see the Visitor Center.
“We always go here to have a picnic and jog, but we never knew there’s a mini-museum here,” a resident said.
