Liberation celebration to start late this year

It will start on June 17, and not on June 4,  after the holding of the 30th Annual Flame Tree Arts Festival which is scheduled for June 9 to 12, he said.

The festival will be held at  American Memorial Park, west of the Bell Tower, while the Liberation Day festivities will be held at the Garapan Fishing Base.

Barcinas said the committee doesn’t want the two functions held at the same time.

“Everything is now under control although we still invite volunteers to join  the different Liberation Day committees,” Barcinas said.

Larissa Flores, concessions and booths chairwoman, said 12 vendors have already confirmed their participation.

This year, she said, the committee will only set up makeshift tents for the  vendors.

The committee is still accepting applicants from merchandisers and food vendors, she added.

For space provided, vendors will be charged $500, which includes the tent and power.

Barcinas said they are hoping for more participants in the parade and float contest.

The committee will offer a first prize of $2,000 in the float contest, $1,200 for second place and $1,000 for  third place.

“We are encouraging the community, different organizations and ethnic groups to participate in the parade,” Barcinas said.

On Friday, Liberation Queen Committee chairwoman Vinycia Seman said Mayor Donald G. Flores will lead the pinning of sash ceremony for the three candidates.

The ceremony will signal the first official activity of this year’s Liberation Day celebration.
