PSS: Stimulus funds should help schools retain accreditation

“We have looked at the [school’s funding] requests and we made sure that they have included areas linked with accreditation,” Sablan said.

The funds allocated to the CNMI under the state fiscal stabilization fund section of the stimulus law, or the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will be used for other things besides education.

Most of the schools requested funding for teaching positions, particularly those that were cut when the PSS budget was reduced in 2006.

PSS has already submitted its application for funds to the U.S. Department of Education and the governor’s office, she added.

The other concerns of the schools include the repair, renovation and maintenance of their  facilities as well as additional learning programs for the students, Sablan said.

“We want to make sure that we provide the teaching capacity needed by the schools,” she added.
