“We want to learn how to produce more and sell our produce there,” said Council Chairwoman Antonia M. Tudela in an interview with the Variety yesterday.
She said they also want to know how the Guam Farmers Cooperative headed by William McDonald are producing marketable agricultural produce.
“We want to learn from them [Guam farmers],” said Tudela.
Tapping the Guam market amid the military build-up will boost CNMI agriculture, she added.
The creation of a CNMI farmers and fishermen cooperative was one of the recommendations of the First Agricultural Summit last February.
For its part, the Farmers Support Group, an alliance of farmers, community and government agencies, drafted a five-year strategic agricultural plan to enhance agriculture in the CNMI.
The group is composed of Saipan Municipal Council vice chairman Ray Blas Camacho, Department of Lands and Natural Resources Secretary Ignacio Dela Cruz and Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service acting Director Felicitas Abraham.
